Sounds of Fall and the Rise of the 5K

The seasons are changing, and I like it. School bells are ringing. Football is on TV. The crisp morning air sings of the possibility of wearing a sweater to work. More importantly…If your desire is to run a 5K race in the near future, chances are there is one close by every weekend from here on out till the end of the year.

According to Jason Fitzgerald, a 2:44 marathoner and running coach,

The 5K might be one of those perfect events – it’s long enough to be considered a “distance” race but short enough to push yourself really hard.

Registering for a 5K is a good way to begin or continue a love affair with running. And whether you are a beginning, intermediate or advanced runner, we all want to run stronger and healthier, right?

If you have a 5K race on your race calendar this fall, NOW is the time to start taking your training seriously. Jason Fitzgerald spotlights speed development in this post, and I strongly encourage you to take a look.

Happy training!

Thanks for the shout out! Fall is such a great time to run races – and calendars are full of 5k’s! Look out for the Rebel Running Guide we’re launching Monday :)

I have been thinking about getting in on a 5k this fall as well. It would be another notch in my belt! I still can’t make it a full 5k without stopping to walk a bit yet….but I’m getting there! A race would give me something to work towards.

Absolutely! Get something on the calendar pronto! That’s how I got into running; hadn’t run at all, but then registered for a half marathon six months out. Paying the money and seeing it on your schedule keeps you accountable to train! Let me know which race you sign up for. I’ll hold you accountable too. :)

I’ve been running events for 3 years now. I’ve still never run a 5k event. I started with a half marathon. I’d decided I’ll just skip the 5k and go longer. Perhaps I’ll try it, maybe entice some new runners to join me. Thanks for the thought-provoking post.

I’ve never run a 5K either. Like you, I started with the half marathon…and never looked back. But two things: 1) If I were more concerned about speed than I am, I’d totally race the shorter distances, and 2) my mom agreed to run a 5K with me this fall, so I think it’s a good distance to do together.

Same here. I’ve always done 13.1 or greater but I think it’s time to do one.

Just found out there is a 5K about 15 mins from my house Saturday at a Apple Butter/ Cheese festival we are attending with the kids…. hmmmmmm . P.S. have only ever run 2 events… 1 10K and 1 26.2….

Therefore you may as well sign up for it and break the international record while drinking an Eisbach.
