Product Review: Vega Sport
While most people are still asleep, you’re lacing up your sneakers. You push yourself beyond fatigue for one extra mile, another set of reps, one more mountain summit or lap in the pool. Some may call it obsessed, we call it dedicated. That level of uncompromising dedication requires uncompromised nutrition. –From the Vega Sport website
When I was asked to test out a new performance system by Vega Sport, I admit I was a little skeptical. Described as clean nutrition, totally vegan and plant-based, I questioned whether or not I should use and then write about such a product. I just ‘love the run’ and am rarely strategic on the nutrition side of being a runner. In the event that I do preplan and need something besides water on a run, I’ve only ever used Hammer Nutrition or GU. I’m an unusual creature of habit.
“But what the heck, I’ll give it a whirl,” I thought.
The Vega Sport performance system is 100% plant-based, free from dairy, gluten and soy, and contains no artificial flavors, colors or sweeteners.
My initial reaction was all about the ‘cool factor.’ The Vega Sport performance kit opened like a flower, and it really was a thing of beauty. If the company took the time to create a marketing tool that was as creative as this, what would the actual product be like?

The Vega Sport system consists of three comprehensive stages: PREPARE, SUSTAIN and RECOVER. And over the course of about eight weeks, I used it all.
I was pleasantly surprised with Vega Sport’s pre-workout energizer. It mixed easily with water and came in two great flavors: lemon-lime and acai berry. It was tasty without being too sweet, and I sipped on this before a couple of runs…and as a result, felt focused and ready.
During my runs, I tried the Vega Sport sustain products and again found the taste to be quite remarkable (so much better than the other brands). Neither the Electrolyte Hydrator or the Endurance Gel were hard on my stomach, and I certainly felt energized. I don’t know if you happened to catch this Daily Mile entry, but it was because of the Vega Sport Endurance Gel that I made it back alive. True story.
Like the others, the Vega Sport Recovery Accelerator tasted great, mixed easily with water and I felt replenished almost immediately. And the chocolate-coconut protein bars! These things are amazing. I must confess, however, that I couldn’t wait for a run. Instead, I stuck the bars in my purse for a mid-afternoon snack at the office. It was a good choice.
All in all, I was extremely pleased with the Vega Sport product. Sometimes it’s hard to branch out and try new things, especially if what you use works. That said, I think this all-natural, plant-based sport performance system is worth looking into.
