Go Big!

Today is my 32nd birthday (Yippee!). But it is two years ago – the year I turned 30 – that I choose to celebrate.

In January 2009, I registered for my first half marathon. Although I had never run before, I figured that in the year where I went from being in the ‘25-29 group’ to the ‘30-35 group,’ I needed to do something BIG; something to remind myself that I wasn’t growing old too fast. I had gotten a tattoo the year before –at 29 – so earning a half marathon medal and crossing that off my ‘life list’ seemed like a logical move for the big 3-0.

For six months, I trained. I talked to the handful of runners I knew personally. I developed a concrete running schedule, asked thousands of questions and prepared like I had never prepared for anything before. I am a professional career woman who works hard and somehow successfully manages to survive life with two kids. But folks, prior to running 13.1 for the first time, I had NEVER strived with such determination and tenacity to accomplish something so personal.

In just a few short months, running had transformed my life, and it never would have happened had I not decided to GO BIG for my 30th year of life.

Today, I celebrate the decision I made two years ago. I ran my first half marathon when I was 30. Two months after that, I ran a second half marathon. Fast forward another month and I ran another. It took one small step and an awfully big birthday, but I fell in love with running and haven’t looked back.

If you have a “big birthday” this year, I encourage you to step out a bit and GO BIG. Find a bigger-than-ever-before kind of race to do. If you’ve never raced, then DO IT. And don’t just settle…make your big year extra-special by taking a chance and making it great.

I have been prepping for a serious 10K marathon in a few weeks and I ran into problems staying committed. I am really good at running and I’ve NEVER had a problem with stamina. My friend recommended and asked me to join an online community

I turn 30 in 2 months and I’ve been saving a flight of 8 years of wines to open. Since I’ll have too big of a headache the day after I turn 30, what should I do BEFORE I open all the wine to go-big?

If you’re a runner, sign up for – and complete – a bike race.
If you’re a cyclist, sign up for – and complete – a half marathon.
      I double-dog dare you.

(Then invite me over to enjoy the wine with you)

Thanks, Stephanie (I almost called you “Skinny” because of your Twitter handle….)! I had a fabulous day yesterday….all the way through, good things – special things – happened. It was pretty incredible.

    I have several comments.

    1) Happy birthday, Kelly!
    2) Congrats on your accomplishments. You’re fast like egggman, right?
    3) I dare egggman to run his age in miles. Tomorrow.
    4) I turn 40 in June and I want to go BIG. What do you suggest?

I hope you are having one FANTASTIC birthday!

Jim, I like your list….I’m a huge fan of “lists.”

Thank you for the birthday wishes! I’m not as fast as Egggman, but on a related note…YOU are running MY current age in a couple of weeks. So thanks for “going big” on my behalf.

40!! You don’t look a day over 29. For your birthday…I think you should schedule a race somewhere you’ve never been. Why the heck not?!

Happy Birthday youngster. I have a couple years til’ my next “BIG” one so I guess I can relax for a bit :P . I read somewhere that it is generally in their 30′s that many people take up endurance sports. I have wondered what makes us do these things. Thanks for a tidbit of info to help draw conclusions.

I think it’s been readily established that you are an anomaly to the rules of running….You went really BIG without having a BIG birthday.

You don’t have to follow this piece of advice/encouragement from me (I know you’re still working on yesterday’s advice).

Happy Birthday, Kelly. Yeah man…..Always GO BIG in all areas of life. Have a super day.

Thanks, Darryl! You know…GO BIG hasn’t always been my mantra. I’m still learning, in fact, what it means to do just that in all areas of my life. It’s not always an easy thing to do….

But it is important, and a time for growth.
