But I Did Not Run

Early this morning, I…

made coffee

packed two lunches

killed the biggest spider I have ever seen

did a load of laundry

watered the front lawn

fed the dog

cleaned up after the rabbit

packed a third lunch

looked for more spiders

got ready for work

got the kids to summer camp on time..

…but I did not run.

Later this morning, I…

got gas in the car

emptied the trash out of the car

responded to work emails

caught up on the news

brainstormed

checked the balances in my bank accounts

…but I did not run.

This afternoon, I…

had lunch with a girl friend

called Terminex

called the house cleaner

talked about my spider problem with colleagues

brainstormed

caught up on more work emails

(did other non-running related work tasks that I probably shouldn’t discuss in this forum)

mentally planned a birthday dinner for my almost nine year old

…but I did not run.

This evening, I…

picked up the kids

bought three home foggers at Home Depot to kill the spiders

bought a fly trap at Home Depot to kill the flies

was told I needed to create a Miami Heat jersey for basketball summer camp

brainstormed in a big way

shopped for black and red Sharpie markers at Home Depot

shopped at Target for black and red fabric markers

picked up a few other things at Target (duh)

…but I did not run.

This evening, I…

made dinner

made a Miami Heat jersey

laughed

tickled

hugged

wiped away tears

brushed teeth

fed the dog

cleaned up after the rabbit

looked for spiders

talked about “the bully” at summer camp

dug old gum out of my son’s glued-in top retainer

talked about the importance of not chewing gum

cleaned up after dinner

wrote a blog post

…but I did not run.

How do you do it? How do you fit in your miles when so much of life gets in the way?

Tomorrow is a new day and you get another run at it!

Love this. It was my day, sans spiders (whew)! When I realized today that I had blown the window of time I had scheduled for my run, I gave myself permission to let it go and enjoy the rest of the day.. driving my kids to camp, cooking dinner, the never-ending laundry (but not really), my business, tuning up my bike, etc… I think that days like these will just help to make those days when we DO run, all the sweeter!

Great post Kelly!  Life always gets in the way, so it’s important for runners to not beat themselves up for missed runs.  But I do all of my runs early in the morning – before anyone else in the house is awake (anywhere between the times of 4:45 – 5:30).

And I agree with Naomi – just reading through your blog made me winded … kudos to you for having the energy to even consider running.

Well, I’d have a little more time if I didn’t have to deal with the big, bad scary spiders….

    What a great post :)

There is not a day that goes by when I am not astonished at the ability of parents to fit in so much!  I don’t have any children, and sometimes wonder how I’m going to get everything done after going to work and getting home again….how you manage is beyond me!You are remarkable, and the fact that you EVER run is, to me, absolutely inspirational when you have so much else to do, and the fact that you have days when you don’t is surely unavoidable and only to be expected.

Thanks for the kind comment, Naomi. Yes, running sometimes drops off the “To Do” list when things like lunches, braces and spiders (oh my!) take up so much time. But I’m learning to allow myself the ‘ebb and flow’ of running. There will be strong weeks and there will be not-so-strong weeks….regardless, I am a still a runner. :)
