Empowering The Runner

The highlight of my weekend was the really cool Stingray net I bought for my pool. I’m serious.

The back-story (there is always a back-story) is that my pool is beautiful but very time consuming to maintain properly. I survived the summer by adding chlorine tablets and sweeping the sides every weekend, but I never fully grasped exactly what I was supposed to do to keep it looking crystal clear.

This fall, as the weather got cooler, I spent less and less time running the pool sweep, sweeping the pool sides, and monitoring the chemicals.

And the gunk built up. And the leaves fell. And I got frustrated about how much work was involved.

The tides have turned, however, because this weekend I visited my local pool supply store. I admitted to the pool guy my shortcomings. I wasn’t afraid to ask dumb questions. I looked around at all the cool innovative pool accessories.

I left the store confident. I left the store with the correct tools….with information…with a friendly face that is willing to help me test the water and fix the sweep and do all the things I was overwhelmed with the last few months.

I don’t know why I didn’t go visit the pool supply store earlier.

Sometimes it’s hard to ask for help, isn’t? Sometimes we are overwhelmed with the unknown and feel caught up in a frenzy simply because we don’t have anyone to guide us just a bit.

But there are tools out there…

The internet is bursting with websites providing instruction about how to run stronger and faster and smarter. And sometimes you don’t know where to turn first or who to listen to. I know I felt that way when I committed to my first half marathon a few years ago. I was overwhelmed with information about nutrition and the correct shoes to wear and the number of miles to run.

Like my local pool supply store, I want Loving The Run to be a place where you can find confidence. I want to answer your questions, point you in the right direction, fill you with encouragement and then stand beside you as you journey down your path as a runner.

I feel empowered now in regard to being able to successfully maintain my pool. I hope you feel the same about running after reading our posts.

I personally would like to read more about overcoming a nagging injury while still being a runner… dealing with the mental side of ‘backing off’… ‘slowing down’… detaching from pride… cross training… in the name of a strong healthy comeback

Whew…I know what you mean about overcoming a nagging injury. I was out for the second half of 2011 with severe ITB problems. It was devasting to me. And difficult. I did write about it and urge you to check out the archived articles for August and September. Thanks for being a loyal reader!

“The Dragon Of Fear” is a good one….as is “Root Cause Analysis.” Shoot me your email address if you can’t find them. :)
