Dear Kelly,
Without a doubt, you lead a busy life. You are juggling many balls, and you feel most at peace when steadily crossing items off your “To Do” list. I know that running will forever remain a top priority to you, but what I notice is that taking care of your body pre and post the logging of miles is often deemed less important.
Last year, I came into your life with an aggressive spirit. “You are not Super Woman,” I screamed, and for six months, I demonstrated the importance of stretching and using the foam roller on a daily basis. We worked through your issues of sitting still and icing the legs you use to push through the miles.
You started to recognize there is great value in caring for your physical body.
You worked with me for months, and I appreciated your efforts. I rewarded your determination by retreating into the shadows. I was still there, of course, but I felt good and well-loved. There was no need to scream any more.
You’ve been running strong these last few months, my dear Kelly. Your miles are increasing, and your confidence is growing. I sense that you are a happy runner once again.
Sadly however, you only get out of a relationship what you put into it. Kelly, I’m feeling neglected again (I know you feel my painful presence today).
I beg of you to take care of me. Stretch me out. Roll me out. Ice away the pain. Take your Aleve.
I’m here again, painfully wanting you to remember that if you want to run, you need to move me to the top of your “To Do” list.
Eternally yours,
Your Left Iliotibial Band
